In the cool little book called How to Be Your Own Selfish Pig, by Susan Schaeffer, I read the following statement:

“In a sense we can’t bump into God in the universe. But in another sense, I believe the fact of His existence bumps into us every day.”

The other day, I had a student ask me how I know that God is real. I had already mentioned to her the general revelation of God that can be seen in nature, and within moral law. I had spoken of Aquina’s proofs for the existence of God and the intelligent design position. I had also spoken of the special revelation of God through the Word and through Jesus Christ.  These were the apologetic methods most often used by man.

But this student asked how I could really know. She had a problem accepting what she could not see. She wanted to know why God didn’t just appear to man as a routine. If He really wants a relationship then why doesn’t He just show Himself. That would be final, all the proof needed- end of discussion.

Apart from any apologetic method, I had but one convincing proof left- my life…. As the hymn reads, “You ask me how I know He lives? He lives within my heart. …” There is nothing more powerful than this testimony. God daily bumps into me. I sense His presence and His leadership. Sometimes it is a bump just to remind me that I am not alone and sometimes it is a little bit harder of a push as He shows me I have gotten off the path.

I can not ever convince someone  using absolute proof. That is what faith is all about. But I can say to you that I never doubt His existence. That is settled for me and it was more that logical reasoning that got me there. It was beyond reason. It was supernatural. You can’t put that under a microscope but that doesn’t make it any less real.

If you open up your heart to hear His voice, you can’t miss Him. He has made Himself quite visible within His creation. His fingerprints are everywhere. But don’t expect a neon sign. Follow the revelation He has already given. The next step is yours. We call it faith……

“It’s impossible to please God apart from faith. And why? Because anyone who wants to approach God must believe both that he exists and that he cares enough to respond to those who seek him.” Hebrews 11:6 Message

  1. Bro, this is the question we all face, both from someone else, and from ourselves at some point in life. It DOES come down to faith. As hard as that is to take sometimes, when you just wish God would show up in some miraculous way and show you. I think the reason He doesn’t is that it really wouldn’t convince us. You and I’ve been reading through the 5 books of Moses, where Israel is DAILY face to face with the very presence of God. Did it convince them? Nope.

    Is it easy?

    Nope.

But I wouldn’t trade the ride for anything!

  2. I think more than anything else, apologetics serves to preserve the faith of believers against the onslaught of the world’s arguments against belief in God. That being said, our experience as Christians is one of the greatest tools in our arsenal. If reason could bring men to salvation then all men might be saved. Instead our sovereign God chooses to use” the foolish things of this world to confine the wise.”

In February 2006 I was listening to WCLN when a program came on reporting that a revival had broke out at Asbury University in Kentucky. The reporter told the story of how in a student led Chapel service, the testimony of one student led to another, and then another. Four days later the service finally came to an end and its result was that nearly every student, faculty member, and even many people from the town had come to faith or renewed their faith in Jesus Christ. I pulled over my car to the side of the road and wept. In my heart, I was crying for the hope that one day we would see that kind of move at VCA. In my mind, I could see students that I had been praying for crying out to God and filling the altars. I weep even as I remember that moment now.

Our testimony as believers is a foolish thing God uses many times to encourage faith in others. Existential truth is truth none the less, and it is the foundation that the enemy has used to bring down a generation through Post-Modern philosophy. God’s fingerprint is all over us! I am resolved to shout it from the mountain tops!
